DEPARTMENT 1 - GAME HORSES

The show will be held on Sunday, August 20, starting at 10:00 a.m. Registration is MANDATORY before 6:00 pm on Tuesday August 15.  Classes may be combined and/or limited at the discretion of the superintendent. Any changes in classes or schedule will be announced prior to the show.  There will be a $20.00 charge to participate in all classes plus membership if not previously paid.

DEPARTMENT 2 - BEEF CATTLE

Livestock must be in place by Noon on Thursday, August 17.
A $5.00 electrical fee will be charged for each fan used.
Grand and Reserve Champion ribbons awarded to best male and female in each
breed where judge feels award is deserving. A herdsmanship award will be given.
(All beef exhibitors are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the wash rack during the fair.)
Cows with calves on foot will be judged as follows: Cow 75%, Calf 25%.
Two animals in one lot may be shown by one exhibitor except only one group entry per exhibitor (Lots 14, 15, 16).  Steers may be used in group entries.

DEPARTMENT 3 - DAIRY CATTLE
Brad Hoscheit, Superintendent
Livestock must be in place by Noon on Thursday, August. 17; judging is Saturday,
August.19 at 9:00 a.m.; $5.00 electrical fee will be collected for each fan used.
Grand and Reserve Champion, as well as Junior and Reserve Junior Champion, will be awarded ribbons to the best female of each breed. A herdsmanship award will be given.
Two animals in the same lot may be shown by one exhibitor except only one group entry per exhibitor (Lots 14-19). Purebred and grade identified cattle may be exhibited.
All animals entered in Houston County Holstein Show and Brown Swiss Canton Show
must be entered in open class.

A Supreme and Reserve Supreme Champion will be chosen from the Junior and Senior Champions of all breeds. The Supreme Champion will be awarded $100 and the Reserve Supreme Champion will be awarded $50.
All dairy exhibitors using the milking parlor will be required to donate their milk money to a special fund used to upgrade and maintain the milking parlor. This fund will also pay the premiums for Supreme and Reserve Supreme Champions. (All dairy exhibitors are also responsible for the maintenance and up keep of the wash rack, milk house and parlor during the fair.)

There will be a Little Britches Class for children 8 and under sponsored by the Holstein Club. Junior calves 3/1/17 to 5/31/17 are to be shown in this class, which may be also shown in open class competition by another exhibitor. All breeds, no pre-registration necessary. Awards provided by Holstein Club.

DEPARTMENT 5 - POULTRY & PIGEONS

Poultry, pigeons and eggs must be in place by 9 a.m. on August. 16; judging at 10 am.

Entries limited to 40 birds per family pen entry. Exhibitors must furnish their own padlock for cages. Exhibitors are responsible for the care of their birds. Exhibitors must provide feed and bedding. Pigeons entered at exhibitor’s risk- they do fly. Grand
Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons will be awarded to best male and female over all varieties in each of these classes: Chicken, Duck, Geese, Turkey and Pigeons.
All poultry not entered in proper class will be disqualified. The New American Standard of Perfection will govern the judge in all varieties recognized therein. Entries in all poultry classes shall consist of single specimens and trios. Trios shall consist of one male and two females of the same variety. Single entries are not permitted to enter trios.
All birds will be judged by comparison.

• Purebred rabbits are those which have a three-generation pedigree showing the ancestral background being of all the same breed, making it eligible for registration.
• All breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association are eligible.
Rabbits will be judged according to ARBA standards.
• Each rabbit must be permanently tattooed in the left ear for identification purposes and ID number recorded on tag.
• No limit on the number of rabbits shown in each lot.
Exhibitors are responsible for feed and bedding of their rabbits.

TIPS FOR BEST RESULTS
• Correct number of specimens required.
• Current growing season may determine maturity of specimens.
• Do not scrub vegetables; wash or brush only
• Tomato stem- remove stem.
• 1/4” stem left on cucumbers.
• Take all but the inner two husks from sweet corn.
• Root vegetables- remove root just below ball. Trim 1” above top
• Pull onion at least 2 weeks prior to fair date so stems can be dry and twisted. Do not peel.
• Remove all leaves unless stated

All entries must be in a presentable condition when brought in, and the superintendent shall have the right to remove any flowers that have become unsightly.  All flowers/ plants must be grown within the past 12 months.
Grand and Reserve Champion ribbons awarded to classes A through H. Classes I and J will share Grand and Reserve ribbons. Classes A through E are judged on quality of flower. Bottles will be available.

4. Each bottle must be labeled. The label should contain the following information:
• Name and address of maker.
• Date (month, year) fermentation was begun.
• Entrants are encouraged, but not required, to list whether fruit, dried fruit, or juice was used in making the wine, and any other    
information which would be useful in describing each entry.

1. Each contestant needs to enter two bottles of beer for each entry. One bottle for the first round and one bottle for the Best of Show  
round.
2. All contestants must be 21 years of age or older.
3. All beer must be homebrewed by an amateur and in non-commercial facilities.
4. Any entry brewed with the help of another brewer must be entered under the names of all brewers that helped.
5. If less than 3 entries are submitted for a lot, that lot will be combined with another lot.
Beer Specifications
• Beer may be made from malt, hops, grain, fruit/vegetable juice, or any other product commonly used in making beer.
• Each entry must be bottled in a clean brown or green bottle with at least a 10-ounce capacity. We prefer that they have no raised

DEPARTMENT 110 - FINE ARTS

Exhibits must be in place by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16; judging at 6:00 p.m.
1. All exhibits should be brought to the Art Department in Floral Hall on Wednesday,
Aug. 17, and be presented to the superintendents for entry.
2. The work of art presented for entry should have been done within the last two years.
3. All entries must be the original work of the exhibitor and should not have been previously exhibited at the Houston County Fair.   
No copies.
4. An exhibitor is allowed two entries per lot to be judged. Other entries will be hung to be shown without a prize or may be sold, in  
which case, the price should be indicated.
5. All entries to be hung must be framed or matted and equipped so they can be hung or they will be refused.
6. No oil will be accepted if not dry. Pastels and other works easily damaged must be covered by glass or sprayed with fixative.
7. A judge will select a prize in each lot. The right to withhold any awards is reserved if, in the judge’s opinion, work submitted does
not justify an award.
8. Paintings may be offered for sale to visitors, but cannot be removed until release time on Aug. 20. If for sale, price should be  
indicated on the back of the entry tag.
9. Small articles must be boxed or mounted attractively.
10. The public will select the People’s Choice Award on Sunday, August 20. One vote per person. The award is a ribbon.
11. Best of Show ribbon awarded for each Class A through E.
12. Grand and Reserve Champion ribbons awarded in Classes F and G.

GENERAL RULES
1. Judging will be done in three categories: 14 & Under, Amateur Adult, & Professional.
2. Professionals are defined as persons making over quarter of their total income from the sale of artwork. Entries limited to two
entries per lot.
3. Entries must be framed or matted and equipped so they can be hung or they will be refused.
4. All photos must be the work of the exhibitor in the last year.
5. Any photograph that has been entered in any other competition and won an award is ineligible for competition.
6. Any photo of copyrighted matter is ineligible, i.e. photos of TV programs, any highly visible article showing a copyright or making  
it easily recognizable.
7. A photo in which a person is 2/3 or more of the scene shall be entered as a portrait.
8. All entries in the Traditional Classes must have a description placed on the back of the framed piece stating: Type of Film, Type of
Camera, Shutter Speed, F-stop and Filter.
